About Chima

Chima Akuchie came to Canada from Nigeria and has lived in Calgary since 2015. He and his wife Chioma are raising three children together.

He works as a Disability Services Professional at Vecova, supporting Calgarians with disabilities and their families.

On any given week that means helping a caregiver find respite, walking a family through a funding application, or sitting with someone who has been told no by three offices in a row. It is work that teaches you exactly where systems fail people, and exactly how much a phone call from someone who will not give up is worth.

Outside of work, Chima serves as an elected councillor with the Athabasca University Students’ Union, volunteers with the Calgary Legacy Community Association, and has been involved in the Black Boys Thrive mentorship initiative and Bright Light for Africa Foundation mentorship program. He is a staunch member of the Catholic Church and serve as a counselor with the Catholic Knight of Colombus. He has helped organize youth mentorship and community leadership programming.

Like most families here, the Akuchies know what it is to build from nothing. They know what a utility bill increase means in a month that was already tight. They know what it is to wait for care. Those are not policy abstractions in this household.

Calgary-East is one of the most diverse constituencies in Alberta, and Chima believes that is a strength worth representing properly. He is seeking the United Conservative nomination because this community deserves someone who is present, reachable and accountable, and who will make sure Alberta stays the best place in Canada to build a life.
